Amanda H. North offers many opportunities for students to participate in programs aimed at supporting their learning and development before, during, and after school. Our specials classes and activities provide a variety of opportunities to develop and showcase their talents and skills.

Media Center/Library

Physical Education

The mission of Amanda North Elementary Physical Education Department is to develop healthy bodies, promote positive attitudes towards lifetime physical activity, practice sports skills, learn about physical fitness, and most importantly to have fun! Physical Education is an integral part of the total education process. It gives the students the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and socially through the use of physical activity. Students will visit P.E. at least once per week.

Music

At Amanda North, students go to music for forty-five minutes each week. We provide sequential, standards-based music instruction that provides singing, movement, learning to read and write music, and playing simple rhythms on classroom instruments. We will also have grade level performances during the year where students have the opportunity to share with their families what they have learned. We are excited to share our love for music with your child as they grow and discover who they are and all that they are capable of.

Art

The elementary art curriculum is built around essential learning objectives for each grade level. In art class, students will learn to use art tools and materials safely and independently. The students will become confident with a variety of art media and techniques. They will learn basic art vocabulary, including the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students will learn to express their own ideas while producing artwork. They will learn to recognize and use all stages of the creative process. The students will learn about the role of art throughout history and across cultures. Most importantly, they will develop confidence and experience joy through creative expression.

Students receive forty-five minutes of art class a week. All of our art projects are saved over the school year and returned in May in an art portfolio that each student creates. Please look forward to enjoying your student’s beautiful artwork.

Battle of the Books

4th and 5th grade students at Amanda North have the opportunity to participate in Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that culminates with book trivia competition at the school and district levels. Library Media Specialists at participating schools work together to choose 5 high-quality/ high-interest books and compile questions for the battles. At Amanda North, students form or are placed on teams of 3-5, and each team member commits to reading 2 of the 5 books. Teams strategically decide how to ensure all books have at least two “experts” and then have 6-8 weeks to read the books. Meetings are held weekly before school, giving students time to discuss elements of the stories and practice answering trivia questions from the reading that they have written for each other. The season ends with teams competing against other teams from their school in a bracket-style tournament with the goal of being the top team. The top team from each school goes on to compete against other schools in the district for the title, bragging rights, and possession of the traveling trophy.

Coyote Choir

Coyote Choir is a combined group of talented 4^th and 5^th grade students who love to sing! Students meet on Thursday mornings at 7:45 AM. In choir, we learn to sing with correct technique and to read music, and we will have performances each semester. There is no audition required to join choir, however, we are looking for students who enjoy singing, working hard, and who can commit to weekly rehearsals. Happy singing!

Coyote Cruisers Run Club

Creative Coyotes Art Club

The Creative Coyotes are a group of artists in 3rd, 4th, and 5^th grade who love to create and make art. Creative Coyotes meet Mondays after school. Artists who participate in this afterschool activity create with mediums and techniques such as clay, sewing, painting, comic book arts, drawing and more! Most importantly artists in Creative Coyotes enjoy spending time with others who are passionate about art and work to improve their art skills while having tons of fun!
